It was unique at the time as it was the first hospital to be organised and staffed by women in these islands. The fame of the hospital spread rapidly and it was visited by the many eminent Victorians. Indeed, Florence Nightingale sought permission to be trained there as a nurse.\u003cbr\u003eThe hospital gradually expanded over the years as demands for its facilities increased. It became a teaching hospital of Newman's Medical School and subsequently of the Medical School of University College Dublin. In 1892 a nursing school was founded in the hospital and its graduates were soon working all over the world.\u003cbr\u003eOne hundred years after its foundation, the hospital was itself too small to cope with the ever increasing demands of modern medicine and during the 1930s ground at Elm Park in Merrion were brought as a site for the building of a new and more modern facilities.
