A University for Kilkenny, by John Leonard
This book tells the story of plans to found a university in Kilkenny in 1689-90 and the personalities involved in that venture. It gives the background to the city's scholarly tradition, and includes documents to do with the Church of Ireland Bishop of Ossory's petition to Charles II in 1677 for a 'New College' and the Catholic Bishop's initiative some years later. In 1690 James II granted a charter to provide for a 'Royal College' (a translation of this charter is provided). Unfortunately the victory of William of Orange at the Boyne put paid to the project.
This is second-hand book in excellent condition.
